The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large dog that typically weighs 75-100 pounds. While they may appear intimidating on the outside, there is nothing to fear with these pups around. They are outgoing and friendly animals that love to be around people. This Coonhound is also known to be very gentle around children and gets along well with other house animals. This dog is the type of pup that will be thrilled to join their people no matter what they are doing, whether they are going for a jog, a hike in the mountains, or just relaxing at home on the couch.
All Coonhounds originate in America, and the Black and Tan Coonhound originates specifically from the Southern United States sometime in the 1700s. These dogs are the direct ancestors of the English Foxhound and also contain other great sniffing dogs, such as the Bloodhound, in their bloodline. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a remarkable sense of smell and was used primarily for hunting purposes. Their sniffing abilities were very useful to hunters as these dogs were able to follow even the faintest of trails. If you see one of these dogs with its nose glued to the floor, which is often the case, they are likely picking up the scents of animals that were once in that area.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is not among the most popular purebred dogs as they have some qualities that not all dog owners can handle. These pups tend to shed a lot, drool, and will be sure to slobber after taking a nice drink from their bowl. While these traits are perhaps not best suited for a clean freak, many can easily overlook their messiness and love them for who they are. Seeing them walk around the house nonchalantly, and quite frankly often make a mess, is certainly comical and will often put a smile on your face.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a dog breed that is best suited for an active family. These pups have an almost unbelievable stamina level and can exercise for long periods. Taking these dogs out for daily exercise is not a recommendation, it is critical for their well-being. Since these dogs love sniffing so much, placing treats around the house or in an enclosed yard is a fun way to stimulate them mentally and keep them occupied. When you succeed in giving them the exercise they require, the Black and Tan Coonhound will be more than happy to hang out in the comfort of their home and enjoy plenty of quality time with their families.
