The Cane Corso is a large dog that has a constant desire to work. Owners of this dog breed must be prepared to run their Corso at least once per day and train often to stimulate their intelligent minds. Due to their high needs, this dog breed is not recommended for an inexperienced dog owner. Failure to meet their needs can lead to them becoming bored and potentially destructive in the house.
The Corso is a dog that was developed in Italy and was used for all kinds of farm-related work. They were used to guard the property, round up the livestock, help drive livestock to the market, and even sometimes hunt large game such as wild boar. The Cane Corso is a Mastiff-type dog and is believed to have descended from Roman war dogs. Their heritage would explain both their tenacious personalities and their drive to get any job done.
Weighing between 90-120 pounds, this big, powerful animal must be trained from an early age. They have a confident personality which can lead to them being quite stubborn at times. Firm, consistent training is the way to go with these dogs, and they need an owner that will not be easily walked over. That being said, a well-trained Cane Corso is about as loyal of an animal as they come. They will love being in the company of their beloved family and will be ready to protect them at all costs. The Corso is known to be one of the best guard dogs, and it would not be in most intruders' best interest to try to break into its territory.
Do not expect your Cane Corso to run up to every stranger and lovingly wag their tail. They are tight-knit with their direct family but are slightly more reserved with strangers. This isn't to say that they behave aggressively without reason, but they simply like their space and prefer to be with people they trust. The Cane Corso is a beautiful dog that demands more work from its owners than most dog breeds, however, the payoff is well worth it as the bond that you will create with your pup will be very special.
