The Hovawart is a large powerful working dog. Their name translates from German to “a guardian of estates” and this is exactly what these dogs do best. They are generally quiet dogs, so when you hear their loud, deep bark, you can be sure that there is something out of the ordinary.
The “Hovie” was originally developed in Germany and was bred to guard homes and livestock. They are believed to have descended from other large breeds such as the Newfoundland and the Leonberger. Their big size, 55-110 pounds, is intimidating, and these dogs will not shy away from defending their territory at all costs. This breed was bred to work, and for them, their job is to defend their beloved humans from any potential threat.
While this dog was originally bred to guard, they turned out to be excellent at tracking as well. For this reason, they are often used as rescue dogs. Despite all of their great qualities, the Hovawart has decreased in popularity in recent years. The main reason for this is that they can be rather difficult to train, they have a stubborn personality that can be difficult to work with. This breed is not recommended for novice pet owners however an experienced, firm owner can turn this stubborn doggo into a great family pet!
The Hovie has a relatively high energy level and requires daily exercise. This breed will not do great in an apartment and will be a lot better off in a home that has a yard available for them. The Hovawart is overall a very even-tempered dog that displays tons of affection toward its family. You can be sure that they will be wary of any strangers coming over to the house, but once they see that their humans are accepting of them, they will be excited to welcome them too.
