The King Shepherd is an impressive working dog. These dogs are capable of just about any task and are very intelligent. In their relatively short history, they have thrived as police, rescue, and guide dogs. These roles are a dream come true for a King Shepherd as they love working and being mentally stimulated. This dog is also extremely loyal to their handlers, which makes them the perfect partner to work with.
This breed is a hybrid, and they are a combination of 2 or more purebred dogs. A King Shepherd is always partially German Shepherd, and then their mix can include the Alaskan Malamute, Great Pyrenees, and sometimes the Akita. Breeders began intentionally mixing these dogs sometime in the 1990s in North America. The size of the King Shepherd will vary depending on their parent breeds, however, they are large dogs and will weigh anywhere between 75-150 pounds.
Given their size, the King Shepherd can be quite intimidating on the outside but are big lovable teddy bears on the inside. They are super affectionate and will love being with their family. They also make excellent guard dogs and will protect their family if need be, but are friendly toward any non-threatening individual. A King Shepherd that was well-socialized as a puppy will also get along well with other dogs and animals. Taking them to the dog park is a great way to let them release their abundance of energy and socialize with other pups!
These stunning dogs make great family companions for the right owner. These are the kind of dogs that need to run daily and will especially enjoy being off-leash in nature. Keeping these dogs in the house for extended periods is a recipe for disaster as they can become bored and potentially destructive if not given the exercise they require. Training a King Shepherd should be a pleasure as they are always more than ready to learn and work. You will be shocked at how quickly this pup will be able to pick up new tricks!
