The Norwegian Elkhound is a stunning animal with features closely resembling those of a wolf. They can be identified by their dense gray coats and their tail that curls tightly over the back. While these pups were originally used for hunting large animals, they are known today as family companions with energetic, extroverted personalities. There will never be a dull moment with these dogs around, as their high intelligence combined with their independent thinking creates an endless possibility of ways they will surprise you every day.
This breed originated in Norway and has existed for at least 1000 years, there are even artifacts indicating that they may have existed all the way back to 5000 BCE. They were used by the Vikings to assist them when hunting large predators. The specialty of the Norwegian Elkhound was to track down animals in the field and keep them in one place until the hunter arrived. Their technique was to continuously bark at the animal and run in circles around them to not allow them to escape. Despite only weighing between 48-55 pounds, these dogs were able to assist their hunter counterparts in hunting for moose, wolves, and bears with the help of their muscular builds and their unbelievable stamina.
The Norwegian Elkhound is completely devoted to their families, however, it is not in their nature to be very obedient. They think independently and will not want to perform a task if there is no reward in it for them. Their devotion will be displayed in their seriousness when it comes to guarding the house. They are not aggressive dogs, but their loud bark alone is usually enough to scare away any intruder and probably the pizza delivery guy too. It is important to know that these pups are heavy barkers in general, and this trait is very difficult to train out of them.
These doggos are certainly best fit for a more active family. They thrive in the outdoors and will love wandering around and searching for any interesting smells. Their prey drive is still largely present with them, so open spaces with lots of wildlife are where they will be their happiest. Taking them on these outings is essential, otherwise, they can become overly energetic in the house and destructive. If you are the type of person that can keep up with their fast pace, and their heavy shedding, then this historic breed will make an exceptional companion!
