“The most beloved dog in Holland”. The Keeshond wasn’t just handed this reputation, they earned it. These medium-sized doggos, weighing between 35-45 pounds, are kind-hearted and love nothing more than being with their people. Leaving your Kees alone for extended periods is a recipe for making them miserable. They will be more than delighted to come with you anywhere you go.
The Keeshond has a fascinating history. They made their initial mark during a period of political unrest in Holland. The leader of the rebel party, which was made up of mainly ordinary civilians, had a spitz-type dog that strongly resembled the modern-day Keeshond. The dog became the symbol of the party, and their demand quickly rose. The dog was also highly popular as a companion and watchdog on small vessels during the 17th and 18th centuries. Sadly, when the rebel party was overthrown, most of these dogs were destroyed by the opposing party. The only pups that remained were those that were living in the rural parts of the country. Thankfully, the breed was rediscovered in 1905, and its popularity has been increasing ever since.
These cute pups can be quickly identified by their foxy face, their pointed ears, and their plumed tail carried high over the back. The most adorable aspect of their features is their trademark ‘Spectacles’. The way the color of their fur darkens around their eyes gives the appearance that they are wearing designer sunglasses. Their appearance alone is enough to put a big smile on your face.
While this pup does tend to bark quite a bit, they are lovers, not fighters. Even if the person that they were barking at comes into your house, they would likely begin to greet them playfully. This breed is extremely trainable and will love learning new tricks. The Kees is a happy dog in general and will not require any specific maintenance. The only thing that they desire, besides treats, is attention and love from their family. Given their great personalities, that shouldn’t be an issue, you will want to have them by your side all day!
