The Afghan Hound is quite a remarkable breed. DNA Researchers have discovered that they are one of the oldest breeds, dating back thousands of years. This dog is best known today for its appearances in dog shows. Their long silky hair is so unique that it is almost hard to believe that it is the hair of a dog. While many of these pups are pampered today, this certainly is not how their existence began.
This doggo originated in Afghanistan where they were used to hunt large prey and defend their humans from ferocious animals. Their long coats were used to keep them warm in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan where temperatures would be well below 0 degrees Celsius.
These 50-60 pound hounds are extremely energetic and have an incredible stamina level. They can reach speeds of 40MPH which is as fast as a racehorse! That being said, owning an Afghan Hound requires taking them out for daily exercise where they can get rid of all their built-up energy.
These dogs are completely independent thinkers. They are not the type of breed that requires non-stop attention. They typically prefer to not be petted and hugged. If they do want affection from their owners, you can be sure that it will be on their terms. The Afghan Hound is known to have a mischievous side to them as well, so don’t be surprised when you see a pair of your socks in their mouth that was stolen straight from your drawer!
