The Akita is quite an amazing breed. Their history began in the 1600s and their main tasks were guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. They were also known to have been used for hunting wild boar and deer. Needless to say this 70-130 pound dog is incredibly powerful.
Very interestingly, the first Akita brought to America was by Helen Keller. The Japanese were very fond of her and gave her an Akita puppy as a parting gift after she visited the country. The Akita is known to be one of the most loyal breeds. As they follow you from room to room you will feel as though their entire mission is to protect you.
This breed can be physically characterized by their large heads combined with their relatively small triangular eyes. They can also be noticed by their noble intimidating stance. The Akita does not get frightened easily and does not typically bark without reason, which makes them amazing guard dogs. Their presence alone is usually enough to send any intruder running.
This breed is known to love carrying things in its mouth. They are so intelligent that they've been known to gently mouth the wrists of their people and guide them to their leash. This dog is not best suited for inexperienced dog owners, they are very dominant, and if you do not take charge they will quickly rule the household. Once your Akita is properly trained, they will shower you with endless amounts of affection and will be the most loyal dog that you could have asked for.
