The Barbet is one of the rarest dog breeds today, there are only an estimated 600 of them worldwide, and no more than 40 of them in the US. Interestingly this is also one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to roughly the 8th century. The name of this doggo originates from the French word “barbe” (beard) due to their bearded face.
This French water dog was bred to retrieve waterfowl for hunters. They have webbed feet which allows them to be excellent swimmers. These pups have a very thick waterproof coat which enables them to retrieve game in the coldest of waters. Nicknamed the ‘mud dog’ for being known to get down and dirty when retrieving game.
The Barbet is best known today for its ability in sporting competitions, particularly agility contests. Their high energy combined with their great intelligence makes them the perfect candidate. These dogs even have some royal history too. The legend goes that King Henry IV’s mistress was once heavily reprimanded for bringing her Barbet to church. (Maybe she thought it was appropriate because of ‘dog’ spelled backward)
The mud dog is known to be an amazing family pet and companion. They are fun, loving, and are very gentle towards children. Some people are trying to raise the popularity of this dog but since they are purebred, they will not be bred unless the demand is met. Thankfully this is the case because the last thing any of us dog lovers want to see is more pups in shelters!
