The Black Russian Terrier is an exceptional working dog and is especially well-known for its ability to guard. These dogs have a protective instinct and will not shy away from a confrontation if they feel like they or their family are being threatened. They are massive, muscular dogs weighing between 80-140 pounds, so they have no issue defending their territory. These dogs are commonly referred to as ‘Blackies’, nicknamed after the only fur color they can have.
This dog was developed in the 20th century by Soviet Union army scientists, and their intention was to create the ideal working dog. The Blackie was given different roles in their early days in Russia, such as patrolling the borders alongside the soldiers and guarding prisons, military areas, and rail crossings. They excelled in all of their working positions and proved to be an invaluable asset for their handlers. The composition of this dog breed is by no means simple, as they contain traces of 17 different dog breeds. To name a few of the dog breeds that are part of the Blackie's composition are the Giant Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier, Rottweiler, and Great Dane.
The Black Russian Terrier loves having a job to do but enjoys spending time with their beloved family just as much. They are typically slightly more reserved around strangers, however, they will display endless amounts of affection toward their people. They will always be ready to play and have plenty of energy; you can be sure that you will tire out long before they do. The Blackie thrives on the attention and affection of their family members, and the resulting friendship is very special. The Black Russian Terrier has a calm, gentle personality that is very admirable and enjoyable to be around.
Also known as the ‘Black Pearls of Russia’, these dogs are extremely intelligent. Their cleverness will surprise you time and time again, especially when it comes to teaching them new tricks. They can learn new abilities very quickly as long as they have a firm owner that can assert themselves as the leader of the household. With the right owner and plenty of physical and mental stimulation, the Blackie will make an incredibly devoted companion. The flip side is that if their owner allows them to control every situation and always have it their way, you may begin to wonder who is really in charge of the relationship!
