The Boxer is a powerful dog with an extremely distinct appearance. They have sturdy muscular bodies, square heads, and are square-jawed. While these pups were originally built to be guard dogs, they are better known today as loving family companions. They may appear intimidating, but anyone that knows them knows how sweet and friendly they are. Often referred to as the “Peter Pan” of dog breeds, these pups only fully mature at 3 years old and tend to retain their puppy-like playfulness for a lot longer than other breeds.
The Boxer descended from the German Bullenbeisser - a dog that was used to hunt wild boar, bears, and deers. The purpose of this dog would be to subdue the prey until their hunter counterpart arrived. The Boxer that we are familiar with today, however, was developed in Munich in the 19th century. They became popular in the United States when American soldiers brought them back home from the war in the 1940s.
If trained for the job, the Boxer can make an excellent guard dog. Typically weighing between 60-70 pounds, these dogs are always on alert and are fearless. They are often used for police/search and rescue related work as they are very trainable and love having a job to do. Their highly energetic nature allows them to thrive in an environment where work needs to be done. Their high energy needs to be taken into consideration before bringing one of these pups home, as they will certainly require daily exercise.
The personality of these dogs can be best described as friendly, playful, and clownish. They love spending time with their people and are especially cuddly. These dogs are by no means small in size, but that will never stop them from hopping right onto your lap. The Boxer is best suited for an owner that loves to play with their dog, and perhaps one that could also put up with a little bit of mischief. It should not surprise you to catch your Boxer with one of your shoes in their mouth
