While the history of this dog has been a bloody one, the Bulldog today is known to be one of the most gentle and kind animals. They are especially known for their compassion towards children. This 40-50 pound doggo can be easily identified by their broad shoulders and chest and their thick sturdy limbs.
The Bulldog was originally developed in England and was used for bullbaiting. This was the practice of the dog clamping its jaw on the nose of the bull and viciously shake it. It was thought that this would tenderize the meat of the bull, and at a certain point, this practice was even mandatory by law if you wanted to sell meat. Unfortunately, bullbaiting turned into a “sport” as well. People would crowd around and place bets on whether the bull would throw the bulldog into the air or if the bulldog would be able to subdue the bull with its powerful bite. Needless to say, the bulldog originated as a ferocious animal.
Thankfully bullbaiting was outlawed in 1835. Certain breeders began breeding only the most docile bulldogs, and remarkably, the dog transitioned into something new in a very short period. Anybody that owns a bulldog today knows that they are lovers, and certainly not fighters. They are more than happy to take a small walk around the neighborhood and spend the rest of the afternoon blissfully sleeping away.
It is extremely important to note that Bulldogs cannot tolerate heat or humidity of any kind. If you take your fur friend out on a sunny day, make sure to keep it brief and give them plenty of water as they can quickly overheat. Bulldogs are so kind and gentle that it is difficult not to love them. They are very friendly and playful towards everyone they meet. One small warning if you do decide to get a bulldog, you might need to wear earplugs at night as they are notorious snorers!
