The Bullmastiff. The “silent watchdog” who has guarding deeply rooted in their DNA. Weighing up to 130 pounds and reaching a height of nearly 2 and a half feet at the shoulder, this breed certainly makes a great candidate for one of the best watchdogs in the business.
Despite its large and muscular build, the Bullmastiff has a very reserved and calm temperament. The dogs were initially bred in England in the mid 19th century to serve as guardians that can protect gamekeepers' land from poachers. The owners needed a dog with enough speed and strength to track down a man, but also a calm nature to not shred the poacher to pieces when they caught up with them.
The Bullmastiff of today will have this same guarding instinct. Even though these are powerful working dogs, they do not have tons of energy. They will be more than happy to be taken out for a quick run and then hold down the fort for the rest of the day. This breed is extremely protective of its loved ones and will be very defensive of any unknown visitors.
These dogs make great family pets and love being with the people they’re familiar with. They are also very easy to take care of as they do not shed much. The Bullmastiff does, however, drool a lot, if you are willing to overcome a little bit of slobber, then these dogs are fantastic companions and will demonstrate endless acts of compassion. As big and strong as they may be, they still love to hop up on the couch next to you and cuddle while you watch TV.
