The Cairn Terrier is a small working dog with very high energy levels. These little guys were originally used by farmers to get rid of vermin, and they did an amazing job at it. These pups have not lost their Terrier instincts and will still often be seen chasing small animals, barking, and of course digging fiercely. The Cairn Terrier only weighs about 14 pounds, but they certainly don’t have small personalities.
This breed originated on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. They were officially recognized as an independent breed in 1912 and are quite the popular choice for pet owners until this day. Their name, Cairn, refers to a pile of stones that were used to mark the burial place of an individual. These stones were a popular hideout for vermin, and catching them was what the Cairn Terrier did best.
These shaggy-looking dogs are highly intelligent and can perform an unlimited number of tricks. They do not respond well to harsh training methods and are usually very sensitive. The key to getting your pup to learn is through consistent effort and positive reinforcement...some treats would likely help too. The most famous Cairn Terrier was ‘Toto’ from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, this film displayed how smart this animal is and how well they understand what is being asked of them.
The personality of the Cairn Terrier is fun and entertaining, there will never be a dull moment with these pups around. These doggos make amazing family pets, love playing with children, and just enjoy the company of humans in general. The Cairn will always make sure to let you know that someone is at the door but it is likely just their excitement to greet your guests. As long as this breed receives the exercise and play sessions that they need, they will make remarkable companions and you will have trouble remembering how you ever lived without them.
