The Chow Chow is a very interesting breed with an extensive history, they are believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds in existence today. These pups have a distinct look that includes a deep set of eyes, a large head, and a mane of hair, it is difficult to mistake the Chow Chow with any other dog. The breed also has a uniquely colored blue-black tongue and weighs between 40-70 pounds.
This ancient breed originated in Mongolia and Northern China. Dogs resembling the Chow Chow have appeared in painting and pottery dating all the way back to the Han Dynasty ( 206BC - 220AD). These animals were used primarily for their hunting and guarding abilities. While it is certainly unpleasant to think about, the people in this era would also use their fur for clothing, and their meat was considered a delicacy. Interestingly, the name of this breed did not derive from their origins but rather from British merchants in the 18th century. All of the miscellaneous items on their ship were referred to as “chow chow”, and on one voyage when these dogs were included in the trip back home, the name stuck.
While these dogs certainly have the appeal of a teddy bear, they do not like being cuddled like one. These are independent, reserved dogs and many people compare their behavior to that of a cat. They are typically more aloof in the way that they behave and do not go out looking for trouble. The Chow Chow is typically suspicious of strangers and has a highly territorial and protective nature. These traits combined make them excellent guard dogs.
The Chow Chow may not love being in the presence of people that they are not familiar with, but they love being with their family. They tend to form a very close bond with one family member in specific but will be happy in the presence of all the people that they live with. They will be reserved towards visitors when first meeting them but will become more friendly once they see that their people feel comfortable around the guests. To put it simply, as long as you respect the Chow Chow's personal space, they will respect yours!
