The soft and cuddly Coton de Tulear, commonly known as a Cotton. Named after the seaport city Toliara, Madagascar as well as for its incredibly soft, cotton ball-like fur. These little dogs typically weigh between 8-13 pounds and live a long life of up to 19 years. These pups make unbelievable companions and are extremely loving toward their families. The Coton will become very attached to you and will follow you everywhere you go, even to the bathroom!
The Cotton originated in Madagascar and has been around for at least a few hundred years. These pups were a popular choice to bring aboard ships in order to keep the rat situation under control. The legend goes that after one of these ships sank, the Cottons were the only ones to survive, swimming all the way to the shore of Madagascar. Once they arrived, these white pups quickly found themselves sitting among royalty in the royal courts. The Cotton can still be found in Madagascar until this day but is a wildly popular breed in the United States.
While the Cotton is surely always ready to play, they actually do not require an excessive amount of exercise. Due to their small size, they will be able to get rid of most of their energy within the house, and they will enjoy playing games of fetch. Getting rid of their energy should never be an issue as it is always fun to play with these doggos. The Cotton is very devoted to their families but loves meeting new people and making new friends. Expect them to be open to receiving plenty of pets and cuddles from strangers whenever you take them out of the house.
The Cotton may surprise you with their intelligence. They are very smart and love learning and performing new tricks. When it comes to being the perfect companion dog, there are not many dogs that match the Coton de Tulear. They will display endless amounts of affection and will also make you smile with their often clownish antics. The best part about owning this dog is that they love to cuddle. They will have no problem getting comfortable on your lap for a few hours while you put on a movie, and odds are they’ll probably fall asleep altogether!
