The Flat Coated Retriever is a playful and fun-loving pup that seems to never lose its wide-eyed excitement from their puppy stage. This breed has been nicknamed the “Peter Pan” of Retrievers because they tend to mature slower than other dogs, they are certainly a perfect match for anyone that loves the excitement that a puppy brings to your life. The kind-hearted nature of this dog will put people around them in a great mood, making them wonderful therapy dogs.
This dog was originally bred in the mid-1800s in England and was once considered to be Britain's most popular Retriever. They were used for retrieving game for their hunter partners on both land and water. While these dogs were amazing at what they did, they were eventually overrun by Labrador and Golden retrievers and are now considered to be quite a rare breed.
This breed typically weighs between 55-70 pounds and is highly active, they will require plenty of exercise every day to feel their best. The Flat Coated will be perfect for an active family that loves the great outdoors, especially if the places they go include a spot where their dog can go for a nice swim. These pups have retained their hunting instincts, so bringing them to a nature spot with plenty of interesting smells and noises will make them as happy as can be.
The personality of this dog is that of a kind, friendly companion that seems to get along with everyone they meet, humans and other dogs alike. These characteristics may not make them the best guard dog, but they thrive as a companion dog. Always playful, the Flat Coated can bring everyone in the room into a laughing fit with their mischievous antics. They are known to sometimes disobey commands for the sole purpose of entertaining the room. While this can be frustrating at times, it is hard to ever stay mad at these pups as their loving nature will always draw everyone back to them no matter what kind of trouble they had got themselves into 10 minutes earlier!
