The Giant Schnauzer is the largest of the 3 Schnauzer breeds. These dogs can weigh anywhere between 55-80 pounds and have a very commanding appearance. While loyal to their family, this purebred dog can be dominant and not always easy to handle - even for experienced dog owners. They can be stubborn at times, and training them can prove to be a difficult task. That being said, the Schnauzer is a big softy on the inside and will love you unconditionally. They may appear intimidating, but the twinkle in their eyes says otherwise.
Although these German-originated pups were originally bred to drive cattle and serve as watchdogs, the Giant Schnauzers that we know today are better characterized by their playful, energetic nature. These dogs thrive in the company of other people and are incredibly loyal. As playful as they may be, try to intrude in their territory, and they will think they are in 1904 Germany guarding a junkyard. This breed is part of the class of working dogs. They are incredibly intelligent and thrive on having a task to perform, even if that means holding a stick during their daily walks. The combination of their intelligence and drive made this breed a great option for German police dogs in the early 1900s. The only reason they never became popular as US police dogs is... well…the German Shepherd beat them to it.
These dogs need to exercise every day, or they can become destructive. Taking them around the block for a stroll will not suffice, the Giant Schnauzer needs to run. This pup will love going to play in the park and will especially enjoy long hikes in nature. They are certainly better suited for a more active owner that enjoys taking their dog on plenty of adventures.
For the Giant Schnauzer, there is nothing that they love more than spending time with their people. They will be ready for as much attention as you can give them, and they will be sure to nudge your hand as soon as you stop petting them. They are not the easiest breed to raise, however, they display incredible amounts of affection toward their family. With the right training and plenty of exercise, the Giant Schnauzer makes an incredible companion.
