The Greyhound is the fastest dog in the world, capable of reaching incredible speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. This dog is, of course, the breed of choice for dog racing. Unfortunately, these dogs are often abandoned when their racing career comes to an end. If you are interested in this breed, keep an eye on the shelters. Bringing one of these dogs home will be a wonderful experience. They are sweet-natured, friendly, and enjoy the company of both humans and other dogs alike.
This breed is just about as ancient as they come. They originated in the Middle East and North Africa and have been popular in many different cultures throughout the years. They were depicted by ancient Egyptians in paintings and are even the only breed mentioned in the bible. The Greyhound was bred as a hunting dog for animals such as hares, foxes, and even deers. These pups still retain their high prey drive until this day and will chase after small animals whenever they are given the chance.
The build of these dogs is iconic. Even if you have never seen one in real life, you would almost certainly recognize them. They have a narrow head, long muscular legs, and a slim athletic body. Just by looking at them, you can see how perfectly aerodynamic their build is. The Greyhound was built to run, and it is not without reason that they will outrun any other dog breed. These pups are medium-sized, weighing between 50-85 pounds.
Interestingly, these dogs don’t have a very high energy level. They are natural sprinters, not long-distance runners. Their favorite pastime would likely be taking a nice long snooze on your couch. This is not to say that they will not require daily exercise, however, not as much as other dogs their size. The Greyhound thrives as a family pet and enjoys being around its people. Don't be surprised by the attention you receive from people when you take your Greyhound out of the house. Everyone will be interested in meeting your unique doggo!
