The Groodle is a relatively new dog breed. They were introduced in the 1990s but have since grown largely in popularity. The desire for this pup is not without reason, they are highly affectionate, intelligent, and maybe most importantly, they don’t shed too much! These pups have extremely easygoing personalities and make wonderful family pets. They also get along great with everyone they meet, so bringing guests over to the house will never be a problem.
Also known as “Golden Doodle”, this dog is a cross between the Golden Retriever and Poodle. The size of this dog can vary from medium to large and is dependent on the size of the Poodle parent involved in the mix. These doggos will weigh anywhere between 50-90 pounds. Given that this is a new mixed breed, Groodles are typically a first-generation cross between the two purebred dogs - rarely are two Groodles bred with each other.
The gentle and calm nature of this breed makes them excellent service/therapy/guide dogs. The Groodle is typically easily trained, and with enough effort, these pups can learn just about any trick. Their patient personality, intelligence, and ability to get along with everyone certainly makes them a very versatile dog. On the other hand, this is not the right dog for you if you are looking for a watchdog. They are not big barkers and do not see humans as a threat. While the intruder is happily collecting all of your jewelry, the Groodle will be providing friendly licks and tail wags.
These pups become extremely attached to their family and do not enjoy being alone. They can become very anxious when alone, which often results in them being destructive. It is important to allow them to get used to being by themself as puppies in order to prevent this behavior. As much as coming home to ripped-up shoes sucks, how can we get mad at these pups for reacting to missing us too much!
