The Irish Setter makes a wonderful companion and is best known for its happy, fun-loving nature. These dogs are stunning animals and can be quickly recognized by their beautiful mahogany coats. This breed has become quite popular over the years due to its many great qualities.
The Irish Setter originated in Ireland, hence their name. The breed dates back to the 18th century and is believed to have been a combination between the English Setter, Spaniels, Pointers, and Gordon Setters. They are purebred dogs today and typically weigh between 60-70 pounds. The Irish Setter was originally bred as a gundog, which essentially means that their specialty was finding the prey for their hunter counterparts. They have a special desire to catch birds, and you will notice them always trying to chase after any bird they notice.
This intelligent dog thrives at obedience, tracking, and agility competitions. Their intelligence combined with their friendly personalities makes them incredible therapy dogs as well. They can be often found putting a smile on some children's faces at the hospital or perhaps entertaining some elderly people in a retirement home. The Irish Setter makes a good watchdog too, but you will never catch them acting aggressively toward anyone.
These beautiful pups make amazing companions but are not suited for everyone. They have extremely high levels of energy, and if they are left without their exercise time, they will be both unhappy and destructive. Even when your Irish Setter receives their daily exercise, they still have a mischievous side to them. Don’t be surprised when you find them with a pair of your socks in their mouth that they just took straight out of your sock drawer! One of the best qualities of this animal is its incredible ability to put everyone around them in a better mood with its unconditional love and friendly personality.
