This gentle giant is hard not to love. The Newfoundland is so sweet and friendly towards everyone they meet, they are Canadian after all. This breed will typically weigh between 100-150 pounds, and they are just about as strong as they come.
Not surprisingly, this breed originated in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. They were originally used for hauling wood from the forest and pulling nets for fishermen. Their work with fishermen turned them into excellent swimmers, and they still display this trait today. There are many different theories of how the “Newfie” originated, however, their exact history is quite vague.
If you are a clean freak, this dog is probably not for you. Their long heavy fur tracks a lot of dirt, and if you combine that with their immense size, your house can get messy pretty quickly. Like most larger dogs, these big guys have a relatively shorter lifespan and they live between 8-10 years.
This big teddy bear makes an amazing family pet. They have a special affinity for children and will act as their protectors at all times. The Newfoundland is also extremely intelligent and will learn new commands at a speedy rate. Just make sure to train them from an early age because they grow up quickly, and they grow up BIG.
