The Old English Sheepdog is a breed that is admired by all dog lovers. They are good-natured, very playful, and often comical. These dogs get along great with children and make wonderful family pets.
The history of the OES is largely unknown. They are believed to have originated either from England or Scotland, however, there is no certainty with these theories. It is known that these dogs were used as drovers, which means they would assist in driving cattle and sheep to the market.
This large breed will weigh anywhere between 60-100 pounds. Their already big size is seemingly even larger due to their tremendous coat. The coat of this dog is something that needs to be taken into consideration before acquiring them. Many Old English Sheepdogs end up in shelters because of the overwhelming amount of grooming that comes with them. The OES will require a few hours of grooming a week, or their fur will get tangled. People will often bring them to grooming services regularly, however, this can become costly.
While the OES is very energetic, they are well suited for an apartment if they receive enough exercise. They enjoy the comfort of home and love nothing more than spending time with their people. This is not the type of dog that you can leave at home for extended periods alone as they will become very anxious. Something amazing about this breed is that they retain their silly, joyful personality well into their older years. Their coat may be a handful to deal with, but their friendly and loving traits make it all worth it!
