The Pekingese is certainly not your average dog. These little guys are packed with character and have a history dating back over 2000 years. This ancient breed is much tougher and braver than their 7-14 pound build suggests.
The “Pekes” originated in China where they were prized companions among the imperial family. They were always closely guarded and were never allowed outside of the palace. Commoners would even bow down to them! The attitude of this dog today gives off the impression that they know what an important role they once held and still demand that same respect from us mere commoners (yes even the bowing).
The Pekes is extremely intelligent but is also an independent thinker and they can be very stubborn. Training them can prove to be very difficult especially if you are not patient. They will not respond well to harsh training methods and will even lash out at you in an attempt to hold their ground.
These dogs are known to get along a lot better with other Pekes than with other breeds, they prefer the company of royalty! The Pekingese will be wary of new people and tend to bark a lot. This does make them good watchdogs, but perhaps not the best neighbors.
Besides this pup's colorful character, they are also extremely cute. They can be quickly identified by their long straight hair and their big, round bulging eyes. These dogs make amazing companions, and it is not without reason that they have been loved by many throughout their long history. Their personality will often have you laughing your head off, and they will be sure to always put you in a great mood.
