The Plott Hound is an impressive breed with an interesting history. These are pack-hunting dogs and would prefer being in a household that has at least one other dog around. They are generally calm within the house, but their true nature comes out when they are in their element in the great outdoors. These beautiful pups have a confident, fearless disposition that is very admirable.
This breed originated in North Carolina in the 1750s and was used for hunting wild boar and bears. The dog is a descendant of a type of German Bloodhound, the Hanoverian Scenthound, which was brought over to North Carolina by a man named Johannes Georg Plott, hence the breed's name. Through some variation of the ancestor breed over the years, the Plott Hound that we know today was the final product. The breed typically weighs between 40-75 pounds, which is not huge if you consider the prey that they were hunting. That being said, these dogs are fierce and would work in large packs making them almost unstoppable. This breed is still used as a hunting dog until this day.
The Plott Hound is typically very protective of their territory and will be slightly wary of strangers. They will warm up to friends that come over to the house often but will have no issue taking down an intruder if they feel as though there is a real threat present. This dog's loyalty is incredible and they will do anything to protect their pack, which in this case is the humans that they live with.
This breed has a very strong prey drive and loves to follow new smells that they are picking up. Their love for the outdoors, combined with their high energy levels, makes them best suited for living in the country where they have plenty of room to roam. Interestingly, if you hear a high-pitched tone coming from your Plott Hound, there is a good chance that they have scented prey nearby. These powerful dogs are very uncommon today, so consider yourself lucky if you get to meet one of these incredible animals!
