The Pointer is a dog breed that was initially created for “pointing” out small game to their hunter counterparts to allow them to successfully make the kill. They perform this task with unbelievable grace that it is something truly incredible to see. When they scent prey, they will stand tall and completely still with one paw raised in the air, pointing in the direction of the prey. These pups proved to be especially valuable before guns were invented, as hunters would use nets to catch prey which would be extremely difficult without the Pointer assisting them.
While Pointer type breeds are known to have been in existence for hundreds of years, their exact history is somewhat unknown. It is believed that they originated in Spain, however, the modern Pointer that we know today was developed in England where they have existed since around the year 1650. This beautiful animal can quickly be distinguished by their finely pointed tail and their long head, they are perfectly built to fulfill their job as a Pointer.
This 45-70 pound dog also thrives in a family environment, they have extremely even-tempered personalities and are very friendly. They love being included in all of the family activities, and they will be sure to liven up just about any situation. Being that they are so close with their people, they make great watchdogs too. They will sound off their barking alarm as soon as they sense that someone is approaching your door.
The Pointer is a wonderful pet to have at home, as long as their high exercise needs are met every day. Taking these dogs for a short walk around the block will not be sufficient, these pups need to run. They thrive when they are outdoors, so they make a great fit for an owner that loves to hike or go for runs. If your Pointer does not receive the exercise that they need, be prepared to see their mischievous side come out. A bored Pointer with an abundance of energy has the ability to turn your house upside down in a matter of minutes!
